A truck carrying butter burst into flames after slamming into an overpass on the Hutchinson River Parkway Tuesday near the Westchester/Connecticut border.
Police say the truck was traveling northbound on the parkway at around 11:20 a.m. when it hit the King Street Bridge.
Firefighters from Rye Brook and Greenwich, Connecticut were able to control the fuel spill fire in a matter of 15 to 20 minutes. "We had fuel oil burning on the roadway, the truck itself, and a lot of the butter due to its combustibility," says Greenwich Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Zack.
Still, with butter and debris cluttering the road, police had to shut down the northbound lanes for hours.
The 18-wheeler entered the Hutch from I-287 and was traveling into Massachusetts. The driver and a passenger were uninjured. The driver said he was following GPS instructions from his phone.
Westchester County police say the driver of the truck will be cited.
