People across the country are paying tribute to Alex Trebek, the longtime Jeopardy! host who died Sunday after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
Trebek revealed his stage four cancer diagnosis in March 2019. He worked through treatment for the disease while still hosting the popular game show.
Ken Jennings, who holds the record for most consecutive games won, gave his thoughts on Twitter, saying, "Alex wasn't just the best at what he did. He was also a lovely and deeply decent man, and I'm grateful for every minute I got to spend with him."
James Holzhauer, who holds the record for highest single-game winnings, said, "it was one of the great privileges of my life to spend time with this courageous man while he fought the battle of his life. You will never be replaced in our hearts, Alex."
Wheel of Fortune host and longtime friend to Trebek, Pat Sajak, said, "Alex Trebek's courage, grace and strength inspired millions and awed those of us who knew him. A tremendous loss for all his family, friends, co-workers and countless viewers. I was honored to be a friend and a part of his professional family for all these years. A very sad day."
Trebek, who was last seen in the studio just a week and a half ago, visited the tri-state area when he hosted "Jeopardy!: College Championship" at Yale University in 2003.
He hosted the show since 1984.
Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series, says Trebek's last episode will air on Christmas Day.
Trebek was 80 years old when he died peacefully at his home surrounded by family.
