A Rockland County mother is going to trial for the murder of her son.
A judge Thursday set a date in January for Lacey Spears, who is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in the poisoning death of her 5-year-old son Garnett.
Investigators accuse the single mom of poisoning her son by putting a lethal level of sodium into the boy's feeding tube, which Spears claimed he needed due to a chronic gastrointestinal condition. Garnett died in January at the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in Valhalla.
Prosecutors are asking for evidence from Spears' past to be admitted into her trial. They say there are records from an Alabama hospital that Garnett previously had high levels of sodium in his system.
Prosecutors say Spears lied about the identity of Garnett's father. She also allegedly made up stories about a fiance and two children that she never had.
They have also suggested she suffers from Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome, a psychiatric disorder where a parent harms a child in order to gain attention for themselves.
Spears will be back in court next month for another hearing, and then her trial will begin on Jan. 26.
