Verris Shako is a trailblazing Yonkers defense attorney who is looking to shatter glass ceilings.

Earlier this year, she made local history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for city court judge and months later winning the Democratic primary - shocking the political establishment.

Shako says she's running for a seat on the bench because she wants to give everyone who encounters the justice system the dignity they deserve when they come to court.

She imagines this fight for equality is the same fight women have been engaged in for more than a century.

Shako says she's learned from all the women that came before her that breaking through barriers is no easy feat.

She's hoping a victory in the November will help secure her place among them.
