A tractor-trailer accident on Route 9A in Hawthorne led to a sticky commute Friday night.
The driver of the tractor-trailer says he lost control after swerving to avoid a car at the intersection with Skyline Drive. The trailer jackknifed, blocking all four lanes in both directions. Traffic was diverted around the accident as units from the Hawthorne and Valhalla fire departments responded to the scene along with the county HAZMAT team. The trailer?s fuel tanks ruptured in the crash, spilling diesel that may have trickled into the Saw Mill River.
No one was injured in the accident, and police say they don?t expect the driver to be charged. The road was reopened after three hours. The Westchester County Health Department will be monitoring the water to make sure the spilled fuel does not pose a health risk.
