News 12 spoke with Mount Pleasant Town Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi on Wednesday regarding 18 water main breaks that have been reported in the town since Jan. 12.

Town Supervisor Fulgenzi says the water main breaks are caused by the cold weather.

He says the biggest issue is the freezing and thawing which moves the ground, causing some of the town's cast iron pipes to crack.

"We have an aging infrastructure. A lot of it has been realigned over the years, so it's not like pipes are falling apart. It's just that overtime, they do age, but we have been maintaining constantly," said Fulgenzi.

He says that depending on the type of break and where it is located, that it can effect the amount of time to repair the fix and its cost.

With the breaks, some residents reported losing water completely for a period of time, but said its normal for the time of year.

"There were two water main breaks in the area. So, one of the days we had no water for about eight hours, and Monday night for about two hours," said Hawthorne resident Chris Shubert.

"It went out for, I don't know...I guess it was out for like two hours, but it came back on, it's not...I don't think, abnormal. I mean, it's very cold out. what do you expect?" said Glen Baum, from Hawthorne.

The town says residents may experience discolored or lower water pressure if a main break does occur.

If you spot water coming out of the ground, officials recommend contacting the town or police after business hours to report the potential break.
