Town hall meeting in White Plains discusses change in laws to help communities of color, migrants

Dozens of people from the Hispanic community were at a town hall in Westchester with state lawmakers to discuss legislation they wish to see passed.
Members of the Hispanic community were at Make The Road New York’s location in White Plains Thursday night to tell state lawmakers about legislation that they want to see passed.
Those lawmakers in attendance were State Sen. Shelley Mayer, and state Assembly members Chris Burdick, Steve Otis, and Dana Levenberg.
The issues discussed were about Good Cause Eviction, the housing voucher program, taxing the wealthy more, and expanding health care coverage to include all immigrants.
It was standing room only for the entire hour.
Two women shared how the rising housing costs have impacted them.
One woman named Olga moved hours away.
While another woman, Laura Martinez Reyes of White Plains, spoke about decisions regarding what she can and cannot pay.
"We want facts,” said Martinez Reyes. “We don't want words."
The lawmakers were all in favor of advocating for these issues in the legislative process.
News 12 is told that the Westchester chapter of Make The Road New York has held a town hall nearly every year since 2019.
