Power & Politics: Department of Buildings brings new changes; hate crimes on the rise

New Yorkers feel the impact of how this city builds, repairs and enforces safety everyday. With new façade rules on the horizon and long-standing sidewalk sheds set to finally come down, the Department of Buildings (DOB) is at the center of significant changes. DOB Commissioner Ahmed Tigani joins the show to break down what these shifts mean for citizens.

New data from the NYPD shows hate crimes are surging up nearly 12% compared to last year and more than half of those confirmed cases are anti-Jewish incidents. In response, the city council just pushed through a slate of bills aimed at protecting religious communities and schools.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani teamed up with rapper Cardi B to announce that applications for the city's first 2-K program will open on June 2 and run through June 26. The administration is launching a citywide 2-K application jingle competition by inviting New Yorkers to submit original 15 or 30-second jingles that encourage families to apply.
