A toddler who was accidentally left in a locked, hot car is OK after a swift rescue by Clarkstown police.

It happened Tuesday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. in the Costco parking lot off of Overlook Boulevard.

Officers with the Clarkstown Police Department say the man came back to his car from the store to look for his wallet. He put his 1-year-old son in the backseat while he searched in the trunk.

After closing the trunk, he realized his son was locked inside the car with his keys.

Police say he tried multiple times to get the car unlocked but was unsuccessful. Police were called.

As soon as Officer Phil Duval, with the Clarkstown Police Department, got to the parking lot, he smashed a car window.

The toddler was conscious and pulled out safely. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out as a precaution but is OK.

"The kid was pretty much in distress, he was sweating profusely to be honest. This was an honest mistake and it could have been tragic, glad to get the child out," says Officer Phil Duval, with the Clarkstown Police Department.

The toddler was in the car for about 15 minutes all together.

Police are reminding everyone to never leave children alone in a car.
