Paws Crossed Animal Rescue in Elmsford is offering tips on how to keep pets safe while the Hudson Valley remains under an air quality alert.
Officials say the pets most at risk include puppies, older dogs, dogs with asthma or bronchitis, and dogs with relatively broad, short skulls like bulldogs, Boston terriers, and pugs.
Side effects from the poor air quality include fainting, excessive salivation and prolonged open-mouthed breathing.
Experts say keep walks short, keep your pets well hydrated and watch for signs of respiratory stress and eye inflammation. If your pet begins to show symptoms, call the vet immediately.
