Yonkers residents who live in flood-prone areas prepared for a winter weather system throughout Thursday that's expected to bring rain and snow along with gusty winds into Friday.
Yonkers Public Works employees handed out about 400 sandbags to city residents since Tuesday.
The sandbags can be used to add weight to cars and to try to keep floodwaters at bay. Resident Mariella DeGennaro did just that.
"The storm that's coming worries us because last time, water came into our basement," DeGennaro said.
DeGennaro's son, Massimo Murillo, said when the remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the Hudson Valley in 2021, the family's 100-year-old house bent, but did not totally break. The family managed to minimize flooding inside.
On Thursday night, the family placed sandbags in the same spots where the water came in before.
"I know there's one coming tonight with the big wind, rain and snow," DeGennaro said.
She added that the family has taken all preventative measures possible. Now, they can only watch and hope.
"We'll be monitoring the basement and the house. Hopefully, the sandbags will hold the water away," DeGennaro said.
