Because driving is going to be tough this morning, we want to give you even more reminders about your safety when it comes to the roadways. That's why Robert Sinclair Jr, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast, is here to talk more about the important safety advice for drivers this morning. Thanks for being here. Thank you for having me. All right, so what are the most important things that people should remember when they hit the roads this morning in addition to what Lisa was just talking about? Well, drivers should keep in mind that posted speed limits are for ideal conditions and that wet roads are slippery roads is going to take you longer to stop. So keep your speed down. That's very important. Hopefully your tires are properly inflated. Hopefully you have good windshield wipers. Also, never drive into standing water. The Centers for Disease Control says more than half of all flood-related drownings take place when someone drives their vehicle into floodwaters, and it's because people underestimate the power of water. 6 inches of moving water is enough to sweep an adult off their feet. 12 inches is enough to carry away any car. And 2 ft of moving water is enough to carry away an SUV or truck, so never drive into these waters. Uh, keep the operative phrase in mind. Don't turn around, don't drown. Keep these things in mind so you can stay safe during these hazardous conditions. Great way to break down those numbers to give us a perspective on what we could be worrying about. Now let's talk about if we do get in trouble. Can you quickly take us through if we start a hydroplane, what we should be doing as drivers? You should brake gently. Uh, most vehicles made in the past 25 years have anti-lock brakes, so if you brake gently, you don't have to worry about the wheels locking up. Brake gently, the technology of anti-lock braking systems will maintain the the tires rotation and maintain contact with the road, and you should look in the direction that you want to go in and steer in that direction if you start to lose traction. And continuing our storm coverage here in the alert center with an update from Governor Kathy Hochle. She's directing state agencies to prepare for the storms, and she urges caution for all of you throughout the area. The division's Office of Emergency Management is in contact with local counterparts and is prepared to facilitate any local requests for assistance. State stockpilers piled. Are ready to deploy emergency response assets and supplies as needed. Hole adds the state DOT also is prepared to respond with more than 3400 staff members actively monitoring known problem areas. They're ready to take action as needed to mitigate flooding. The Thruway Authority also has more than 650 operators and. prepared to respond to any wind or flood related issues on the thruway across the state. Now the authority also encourages drivers to download its mobile app for the latest updates. Governor Hochle also encourages New Yorkers to sign up for real-time weather and emergency alerts on their phones. You could just text your county name to 333-111.
