The contentious race for Mount Vernon mayor came to a close Tuesday with Richard Thomas declaring victory.
Thomas, a city councilman, first pulled off a big upset back in September during the Democratic primary, taking the party line away from incumbent Mayor Ernie Davis. Thomas thanked everyone for their support and help in winning the election.
Thomas faced off against City Councilmember Deborah Reynolds and longtime New York state Sen. Ruth Hassel Thompson.
Thomas urged everyone to work together as a team to help improve Mount Vernon.
