WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The Saturday morning hours will be dry and cloudy, up until about 11 a.m. Starting from our western areas to the east, the snow will move in. It will fall across the region between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. After 1 p.m,, snow continues to fall through the afternoon and into the evening hours.
  • Between 9 p.m. to midnight, a wintry mix will move in from south to the north. Temperatures will warm up a touch, from the low to mid-30's. This will allow the snow to fall and melt a little before hitting the frigid surface. This will create potentially freezing rain or sleet to come down. The wintry mix will make the roadways a mess to navigate, especially less traveled roads. And because the sun will have set for the day, seeing at night will be extra difficult in more rural areas. It is advised to be off the roads after 9 p.m. Some spots could see an icy coating to a little bit more than that. Anywhere the ice builds up, there could be downed branches and some isolated power outages.
  • Overnight, the wintry mix will continue to fall for many with the exception of the more urban areas in southern Rockland and southern Westchester counties. Gradually through the morning hours, the wintry mix will transition to rain. Rain is expected to fall until the late afternoon to evening hours. The mountainous areas of the Catskills will still see a wintry mix come down with rain, as the higher elevations will have the temperatures trending colder than the surrounding areas. The afternoon areas could have some batches of moderate to heavy rain coming down. There is also, albeit small, a chance for hearing a rumble of thunder from some isolated thunderstorms.
  • As the system departs, the skies will get drier on Sunday evening, but the winds will pick up. The ground will be very soggy as nearly an inch of rain could come down. So, isolated pockets of flooding (like in the usual low-lying areas in South Westchester County) could be popping up.
  • Monday is Presidents Day, and it will be a frigid one! Arctic air will come rushing in behind this third system of the week for Monday and Tuesday. Toss in gusty winds and the "feels like" temperatures could be in the single digits at times during both days... BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
  • Next Wednesday and Thursday, we are watching a system that will try to move up from the south. If it comes into our area, we could get another round of winter weather to contend with. For now, there is still a fair amount of uncertainty with the forecast data.
