For months the Hudson Valley has been talking about pain at the pump, but filling up now might be less painful if you're helping a good cause.
The Shell gas station on Old Route 202 in Pomona has joined a national program they are calling a "Giving Pump."
Beginning this month, simply fill up at the purple Giving Pump - it's marked off - and a portion of your purchase will be donated to a local children's charity.
In Pomona, 3 cents of every gallon is going to what's called the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research in honor of one of their own.
Dominique Valenti who works at Shell has a 13-month-old daughter named Catalina who was born with Prader-Willi Syndrome.
It's a rare genetic disorder. Only one in 15,000 to 20,000 children are born with the condition that causes a variety of issues from intellectual disability to poor growth and physical development.
And while there's no cure, there are some treatments that can help, and little Catalina has made some progress. Her mom says she is speaking a bit and crawling.
Both Dominque and customers say the Giving Pump not only helps but filling up is a bit easier when it's for a good cause. "Helping the foundation that could help other families as my own," says mom Dominique Valenti.
Customers say that knowing they're donating to a worthy cause takes a bit of the sting out of having to spend so much at the pump. "It's definitely nice knowing that you're spending all this money on gas and it's going to a good cause rather than just giving all your money to some gas company," says Richard Abril, of Garnerville.
The Giving Pump charity runs from August through Oct. 31.
