When it comes to back to school shopping, there are items your student needs but there are also plenty of items they want.
A new wardrobe for the new academic year doesn’t come cheap. Circana’s chief retail analyst is outfitting us with some of the pricing information that will help us plan.
“Let’s take boys and girls polo shirts, they range from the basics at $5 up to on average about $12,” said Marshal Cohen. “Basic pants are running at around $12. Last year, they were about $10.”

According to Cohen brand names can bust your budget. The cost of jeans can jump at least $10 if a designer is attached to them.
Dressing the part doesn’t stop at the top. After a summer of wear and tear, new shoes are also something you’ll want to set aside for.
“Athletic footwear has taken over the entire kids footwear area. Sneakers running between $15 and $20 all the way up to $60,” said Cohen.
If your child is required to wear a uniform you may be able to get away with purchasing less items, but Cohen does recommend you check with you school regarding uniform seasonality.
Uniform swaps may result in some savings, and caring for your clothing may help keep it fashion forward for several years to come.
