Four young children were trapped in a school bus when live electrical wires suddenly came down right on top of their bus Monday morning.
The bus was driving on Saratoga Avenue near Elinor Place in southwest Yonkers when the poles fell, covering the bus in live wires. The bus driver told the kindergarten passengers to stay inside the bus and not to move around, a decision that may have saved all of their lives. Con-Ed crews were on the scene immediately, making sure the wires were no longer live. Once the scene was safe, the children were removed from the bus and returned to their parents.
The downed power lines meant anyone living in a two-block radius lost power. Con Edison estimated that power to those neighborhoods would be restored by Tuesday morning.
