Yorktown Councilman Terrence Murphy has defeated former Assemblyman Bob Castelli for the Republican nomination for the 40th Senate District.
Murphy and Castelli both ran to replace state Sen. Greg Ball, who decided not to seek re-election. Ball endorsed Murphy, who also had the backing of the Republican Party.
Castelli joined the race three days after Ball announced he would not run again, saying he wanted to give voters a choice. The two debated last week on News 12.
Murphy will now face Democrat Justin Wagner in November. Wagner, an attorney from Croton, unsuccessfully challenged Ball in 2012.
