A large tent was set up just outside of the main entrance of St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers to screen and possibly test individuals with coronavirus symptoms.

The tent went up on Friday to help stop the spread by separating individuals who have potential symptoms of COVID-19 from other emergency room patients - about 75 people were screened the first day.

Hospital officials say they have more than 2,000 coronavirus tests and can obtain more if needed.

 Before entering the tent, there is an initial screening process to try to identify people who are showing symptoms of the virus.

"At that point we'll try to bring them into the tent so that the medical personnel from our emergency can start the screening process immediately in the tent - it's to try to expedite the process as well as to keep the patient with similar symptoms from spreading it to those who don't have it," says Anthony Leno, physician director of emergency services at St. Joseph's.

The tent is open during the week and will stay open as long as it's needed in the community.
