As fire spread through a Peekskill apartment building, a tenant helped to alert neighbors to the danger.
The fire started at around 6:30 p.m. Monday at the 21-unit complex on Freemont Avenue near Peekskill High School.
Armando Rodriguez roused his roommate, Alverto Cruz, and then Rodriguez ran in the hallway to alert other tenants.
"I go open the door, and then I see everything," says Cruz recounting the fire. "I run, and I take my two kids."
As workers erected fences around the fire-damaged apartment building Wednesday, dozens of people remained homeless.
About 56 residents, many of them children, were still being housed at Peekskill Middle School by the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
