As Milford police continue to investigate a serious e-bike crash that sent three kids to the hospital, the community is renewing its calls for more e-bike safety on the streets.

Thursday night's accident happened at the intersection at Bic Drive and Naugatuck Avenue.

Authorities say an e-bike with three kids on it hit an SUV.

The kids were then transported to the hospital for treatment.

One of them, police say, had serious injuries.

"Three kids on one bike? That's crazy," says Kathy Dattilo, of Milford. "These parents need to not let these children have them."

Fire officials say it's the second serious accident involving a car and an e-bike to happen in town in just the past three weeks.

Mike Masisco, longtime owner of Tony's Bikes & Sports in downtown Milford, says his business has a strict vetting process when it comes to selling e-bikes to customers.

Masisco believes more education, safety equipment, and parents doing their part, could lead to a solution to the ongoing problem.

"Not everybody is doing the wrong things with these or misusing them, but that is happening," Masisco says. "It's really about everyone understanding how to dance... how to share the road together."

Residents believe a lot of the responsibility falls on parents of young riders.

"Teach your kid right from wrong," says Joe Rainone, of Milford. "Do the right thing."

Milford police continue to investigate Thursday night's crash.
