As Uber, a popular ride-sharing app, waits for the green light to expand services in New York State, a new report released today by the taxi industry says it will destroy thousands of jobs.
The Committee for Taxi Safety released a report saying that Uber will destroy over 11,000 upstate New York jobs.
They say this is because one-third of the taxi industry is made up of behind-the-scenes workers like dispatchers and support staff that aren't needed with an app like Uber.
Uber says it can create 13,000 new jobs for drivers outside of New York City if regulators allow them to operate across the state.
In a statement Uber said, "This report is from the same New York City taxi medallion owners that first proposed a cap on Uber - a proposal that most New Yorkers believe was motivated by campaign donations."

Taxi groups say most Uber drivers are part-time, they don't get benefits like health care, and they aren't screened to the same level as taxi drivers.
