The Tappan Zee Bridge is in its final days of standing over the Hudson River.

According to NewNYBridge.com, Tappan Zee Constructors is scheduled to demolish the remainder of the span with explosives on Jan. 12 at 9:30 a.m.

Officials say the New York State Thruway will be temporarily closed in both directions approaching the bridge in Tarrytown and Nyack starting at 9 a.m. for approximately 45 minutes.

The waterways surrounding the bridge will also briefly be shut down to protect the public.

Drivers are being advised to travel alternate routes.

Back in September, officials determined the old bridge was structurally unsound, which prevented workers from taking it down piece by piece.

The state anticipates the controlled demolition should not directly affect local residents.

Officials say the demolition will sound similar to a single set of fireworks. Loud noises, however, can often startle pets. Residents are being advised to keep their animals indoors.
