A Cortlandt Manor mother says her son contracted a mysterious illness while he was incarcerated at the Westchester County Jail.
Tamara Carter's 18-year-old son Brandon Rodriguez was arrested on an outstanding warrant at the end of August. Less than a week after he was incarcerated, Carter claims her son came down with a mysterious illness. Carter says Rodriguez was throwing up and complaining of headaches and lost 20 pounds over two weeks.
Carter says Rodriguez received no treatment for his illness and was only brought to the emergency room when he said she would file a lawsuit against the jail.
Rodriguez was hospitalized Sept. 10 and is now in the ICU at Westchester Medical Center. Carter says he is unable to walk and can't see out of his right eye. She says he is also unable to feel the left side of his face and his speech is slurred.
Carter says she is now planning to sue the jail. "Health care should be the same if you are in jail or out of it. Bottom line," says Carter.
A spokesperson for the county jail confirmed with News 12 that Rodriguez was in their custody. They refused to comment about Carter's allegations of medical negligence due to HIPAA laws.
