Rye Country Day School announced Monday night that it will close for two weeks after two students were identified as probable cases of swine flu.
The Westchester County Health Department recommended the school close after two students became ill over the weekend, bringing the number of probable cases in the county to at least four. The health department says the closure is a necessary precaution to prevent the spread of germs between the school's 900 students.
County Health Commissioner Joshua Lipsman says the students' symptoms are mild. The health department says the first two cases reported in the county are students at Rye Middle and High Schools.
County health officials advise Rye Country Day students refrain from gathering in groups of more than five people during the 2-week closure. According to health officials, it will defeat the purpose of closing the school if students spend too much time in large groups.
