Hundreds of swimmers, cancer survivors and supporters gathered in Larchmont Saturday for the 34th annual Swim Across America Long Island Sound.

The event raised money to support cancer research and patient care programs.

It also featured an open-water swim in the Long Island Sound. Eight community pools across Westchester County hosted additional swims to allow participants of all ages and skill levels to get involved in the cause.

Funds raised through the event benefited several local cancer research and support organizations that include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine and Cancer Support Team.

Organizers said a key part of the event's mission is to ensure that money raised in the region stays local to support groundbreaking research and patient services.

Swim Across America Long Island Sound has raised more than $2 million for cancer research and support services over its history. Organizers said donations are still being accepted to help continue to fund lifesaving research and local cancer care programs.
