A Massachusetts man was arraigned Tuesday on charges that he tried to kill a Westchester County police officer during a traffic stop Monday.
Events unfolded around 11:30 a.m. when a Westchester County police officer stopped a Honda Accord driven by Kevin Santos, 22, of Massachusetts, for a minor traffic violation on the Hutchinson River Parkway near the North Avenue exit in New Rochelle.
Upon discovering that Santos did not have a valid driver's license, the officer asked him to step out of the vehicle for more questions. Police say Santos stepped out, then immediately bolted back into the car. Authorities say the officer was able to partially climb inside to avoid being dragged, then struggled with Santos as he sped away.
The officer engaged in a physical altercation with Santos while the car was going up to 60 mph, police say.
Fellow officers say the car traveled about a quarter mile before being boxed in by other patrol cars.
The officer had hand and arm injuries, but is expected to be OK.
Santos was taken into custody, and police officials say they found 9,000 glassine envelopes of heroin after searching the vehicle.
Santos is looking at multiple felony charges including attempted murder of a police officer, assault, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree.
Santos was remanded to the Westchester County Jail.
