A Yonkers nonprofit is hosting a youth summer camp encouraging girls to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and math.
Sister to Sister's Summer STEM Camp aims to give young girls the confidence to pursue such studies, organizers say.
"I wanted to defy stereotypes," says Khadyja Sarr, a college sophomore studying STEM who also works as a camp counselor.
Programs at the camp include mathematics and computer programming, but officials say some projects are aimed toward having fun, like creating music videos using science.
Women, and women of color in particular, are in short supply in STEM fields, organizers say.
