Low-income Sullivan County residents who live in buildings at high-risk of climate change impacts are on track for healthier living conditions.
Two apartment buildings are getting more than $8 million worth of improvements.
Barkley Gardens Apartments in Liberty and Lake View Apartments in Loch Sheldrake are on track to see major changes.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) granted loans for the two Sullivan County HUD-assisted properties owned by Conifer Realty.
The money is coming from the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP), which funds energy efficiency and climate resilient projects.
HUD selected Barkley Gardens to receive a GRRP loan of $4.08 million.
Barkley Gardens is home to 50 low-income households.
The property may be at risk of flooding, lightning and increased social vulnerability, according to the National Risk Index.
Lake View Apartments, which is exposed to riverine flooding and landslide hazards according to FEMA, received a $4.72 Million loan.
The whole building is under Section 8 housing.
The owner will be looking into how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs by using renewable energy to make the properties more resilient to climate hazards.
HUD contractors will be doing assessments of both properties to decide the best way to spend the money.
