Students, staff at Brooklyn College discuss support for LGBTQ+ community on campus

With the Pride March less than a week away, staff and faculty at Brooklyn College spoke with News 12 about the support and resources they are making available to students and members of its LGBTQ+ community.
In 2016, students, staff, and faculty of the LGBTQ+ community said they informed the college’s President Michelle Anderson that they felt their needs were not fully addressed.
Anderson acted by allowing a safe space to be created – the LGBTQ+ resource center, where students and staff could gather and provide each other with support.
According to the chief diversity officer, the resource center provides students with numerous programs and tools, such as personal counseling and support groups.
Those working at the center say they are looking to possibly start a mentorship program with politicians and activists advocating for LGBTQ+ issues. They plan to have a full-time director of the resource center by the start of the fall semester.
