Starting Thursday, middle school students were able to see the movie "Selma" for free at participating theaters throughout the city.
Selma chronicles Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaign that led to the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. A fund was created by a group of prominent entertainment moguls and companies to offer 27,000 free tickets to the movie for seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders.
AMC Theaters in Co-op City and the Concourse Plaza Multiplex on East 161st Street are two locations in the Bronx now offering free admission.
Several Bronx residents told News 12 that it is important for the younger generation to understand the struggles and triumphs of the civil rights movement.
Free admission to the movie runs until Jan. 19 at participating theaters throughout the city. Middle school students must present their student ID or report card.
