? Several Rye residents are being treated for potential exposure to rabies after coming in contact with an infected cat.
Doctors say rabies can be deadly and people who touch a rabid animal or come in contact with its saliva should quickly take preventative action. Officials say the cat in question was a stray that made its home at the Rye Golf Club. Nearby residents fed the cat and took care of it. One of them called the Westchester Shore Humane Society after becoming sick.
Health officials say it?s unlikely house pets will get rabies from stray animals because most of them are vaccinated.
