HEADLINES:
  • On target for 3-6 inches of snow across most of the Hudson Valley with isolated pockets of 6 inches+ expected along and north of I-287
  • A Winter Storm Warning is in effect this afternoon and evening along and north of I-287. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for southern Westchester County.
  • Bitter cold overnight tonight. Severe cold lingers on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Hudson Valley along and north of I-287 starting this afternoon. Neighborhoods under the warning can see more than 6 inches of snow. Driving will be difficult or impossible at times on untreated roads.
In Southern Westchester County, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect. Snow totals here will be near 6 inches, and driving will be difficult this afternoon and evening. Although snow totals will be higher north and west of here, plowable snow is expected to make driving difficult.
TIMING:
Dry conditions are expected this morning with temperatures near freezing. Snow showers will arrive starting at noon but will be scattered through 2 p.m. Visibility may be reduced at times, but accumulation may be slow to start in southern Westchester county where temperatures are slightly above freezing.
The worst weather arrives between 3 and 6 p.m. and will linger until bedtime. Snow accumulation rates will exceed 1 inch an hour at this time so expect snow to accumulate very quickly.
Snow tapers off between midnight and 3 a.m. and sunshine is expected for the Monday morning commute.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The snow may be mixed with sleet and rain to start in Westchester County. It's best to clear out this round of snow this evening before temperatures crash overnight. Temperatures tonight will drop into the teens and turn the bottom of the snowpack into a sheet of ice.
Visibility will be reduced even with early snow showers, but accumulation may be slow to start and pick up quickly when it gets dark.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Bitter cold weather is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Temperatures will be in the single digits, but it will feel like 0F or even colder in some neighborhoods. A weak disturbance could bring snow flurries Tuesday night into Wednesday. We're tracking another coastal storm Thursday night into Friday that could also bring additional snow showers. Stay tuned for the latest updates. An active storm pattern is expected for at least the next two weeks.
TODAY: Mostly cloudy to start with highs near 40. Snow develops after noon and will be heavy after 3 p.m. Snow tappers off after midnight.
TONIGHT: Snow ends. Very windy and cold. Lows in the teens, feels like 0F
MONDAY: Sunny, cold, and windy. Highs in the mid 20s. Feels like near 10F. Overnight lows in the single digits.
TUESDAY: Dangerous cold. Feels like sub-zero in the morning with feels like temperatures near 10 in the afternoon.
WEDNESDAY: A stray snow flurry early. Dangerous cold. Feels like sub-zero in the morning with feels like temperatures near 10 p.m.
