It's a near miss for the nor'easter this week but not so much for the bitterly cold temperatures. The coldest air of the season is here and low temperatures will fall back into the single digits to near zero.
North and west, temperatures will fall just below zero. The last time we had temperatures fall this low at night was back in 2023 (Newark was 5 degrees) and 2019 (Newark was 2 degrees).
The NWS continues the cold weather advisory into Saturday morning. Wind chills can go as low as 10 degrees below zero and as low as 15 degrees below up north.
The good part about the weekend will be very minimal impacts from the nor'easter. Forecast guidance is bringing this strong storm even farther offshore. Our southeastern shoreline may get clipped by some light snow and also feel the impacts of minor coastal flooding. Winds will be whipping to 30 mph or higher.
This limits the amount of snow south of Exit 98 to only a trace up to an inch possible way south in Atlantic/Cape May counties. Snow would fall mostly overnight Saturday and Sunday.
Unfortunately, the very cold weather will persist through the first week of February. Temperatures should rise above freezing early in the week, but then another cold snap hits for late in the week and into next weekend. There is a chance of some snow around Thursday.
