If you skid, don't panic. Keep your eyes on the road, drive in the direction you want the vehicle to drive, and never jam on the breaks.

With a dangerous wet weather system headed toward the city, News12's Storm Watch Team meteorologists are making sure you are staying safe.

Meteorologist Hope Osemwenkae said the first step toward safety is to plan ahead.

"Wednesday morning would be the time to prepare...bring in trash bins and make sure to charge your devices," said Osemwenkae.

She noted the system will hit the area during evening rush hour. Osemwenkae said to plan ahead by aiming to commute home before the storm hits.

She also said to remain alert and watch out for downed tree limbs and debris as high winds are expected.

Osemwenkae encouraged those who can take public transit to use it as an alternate to driving.

But if you need to hit the road, here are some tips for AAA:

Don't use cruise control during wet weather.

Slow down and leave enough room between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

If you skid, don't panic. Keep your eyes on the road, drive in the direction you want the vehicle to drive, and never jam on the breaks.
