WHAT TO KNOW:
- Windy and cold today. A few snowflakes are possible this afternoon, little to no accumulation.
- Sunday is the pick of the weekend. Still cold, but less windy.
- Monday's storm stays to our south, but a few bands of snow could bring a coating to 2" of snow. Better chance for Brooklyn, but still minor.
The first winter storm of the new year arrives early next week. How will it impact your Monday commute?
It's a windy start to our weekend, but wintry weather could start off the work week. A large storm will pass through our south, but cold and dry air is also moving in. We're anticipating minor impacts to the Monday commutes because of passing snow showers, but this weekend is dry.
The Weekend
A fresh batch of cold air is moving in today and that means plenty of wind. Overall, it's a dry weekend but a few snowflakes are possible today with any passing clouds. This risk is more likely to the north and west.
High temperatures will be steady in the low to mid 30s, but with wind gusts up to 30 mph this afternoon, it’ll feel like it's only in the low 20s. Sunday is less windy, but still quite breezy with gusts up to 20 mph. Temperatures will be similar - highs in the 30s and wind chills in the 20s in the afternoon.
Monday's Storm
A large storm will pass to our south on Monday just as dry and cold air is trying to push in. A few flurries are expected on Monday morning with light snow showers on and off throughout the day. The best chance for snow will start in the late morning and that risk will remain for the afternoon. The biggest impact from this storm will be during the evening commute on Monday, but only minor accumulations are expected.
Farther to our south, this storm will bring significant snow accumulations. Although we have high confidence that the storm will be a miss for us, check back for updates because if the storm takes a more northerly route, snow will be more impactful.
What's Next?
It's a cold week with no warmup in sight. Although temperatures will be below the climatological average, it's nothing extreme for this time of the year. Highs will struggle to get above freezing and low temperatures will hover on other side of 20F. The good news is this cold weather comes with dry air. After Monday's storm passes, there are no major snowstorms for at least a week.
