Drivers were no match for the nor'easter on Routes 6 and 293 in the town of Woodbury Tuesday afternoon.
The snow ultimately shut down those roadways, and News 12 saw state police blocking traffic on Route 17 by Exit 130A.
Officials with the Orange County Office of Emergency Management say parts of the county got pummeled with 8 inches of snow by early afternoon in the first major storm of the outgoing winter season.
“A band came through Greenwood Lake and Monroe, so our high totals are in that area,” said Commissioner Brendan Casey.
Viewers from Bloomingburg in Sullivan County reached out to say they got 10 inches of snow by late morning.
Despite the snow totals, the ground was warm enough to see blacktop in most of the area including Route 32 in Highland Mills.
News 12 talked to a tow-truck operator who said the conditions were bad overnight.
“208 was pretty bad at 2:30 in the morning. People sliding off the roads. They should’ve just stayed home," said Harry Hernandez, from Chester.
Many folks did. News 12 saw people walking around the ponds in Monroe.
“It’s almost spring, but here we are. It’s very nice. The dog enjoys it," said one resident.
Kids home from school appreciated the rare snow day, too. Monroe police shared a picture on Facebook of one of their officers helping kids build a snowman.
