ALERTS: A winter storm watch is in effect for tomorrow evening through Sunday mid-morning. This will likely convert over to a winter storm warning as we get closer.
This weather pattern of winter storm chances every couple of days looks to continue for at least the next eight to ten days! The News 12 Storm Watch Team will be here to help keep you safe and informed through each one with frequent updates on-air, on social media and here on News12.com.
There is still time to plan and prepare for this weekend's storm. Today will be windy, cold and - other than a few flurries - dry. It will feel like the 20s through this afternoon. If you have a snowblower, today is the day to check to make sure it works and is ready to go for tomorrow night through Sunday morning. Otherwise, keep those shovels close by! There is also the chance for a few scattered power outages due to heavy snow with this next storm so make sure you have a way to charge devices should you lose power.
Tonight will be partly cloudy and dry with lows around 22 degrees. Even the start of tomorrow will be dry and just mostly cloudy through mid-afternoon with highs around 34 degrees.
WEEKEND STORM TIMING:
There can be some flurries or light snow showers after 3 p.m. tomorrow, but the steadier, heavier snow arrives closer to 8 p.m. Saturday. Moderate to heavy snow continues overnight with the worst starting to wind down after 4 a.m. Sunday. Snow showers linger through around 8 a.m. Sunday.
WEEKEND SNOW TOTALS:
An average of around six inches for the entire lower Hudson Valley. Amounts can be a little lower in southern Westchester and Rockland Counties with the chance for some mixing there. North and west, amounts can be closer to seven inches or so where there will be no mixing.
LINGERING WEEKEND STORM IMPACTS:
You will have to clean up and give yourself plenty of extra travel time on Sunday. There will be some melting Sunday, but refreezing is likely to occur Sunday night leading to icy areas.
NEXT WEEK:
There are multiple chances for snow, mix and rain next week with low confidence in any details at this time. Details become clearer over the weekend. A light to moderate snow event cannot be ruled out Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning and a snow to mix to rain and back to snow possibility between Thursday and Friday next week. Looking even farther ahead, there is the chance for another winter storm next weekend. After that, this incredibly active weather pattern may calm down a bit.
FORECAST:
TODAY: A mix of sun and clouds with a slight chance for a few flurries. Much of the day is dry. Windy and cold. Highs occurred this morning around 38 degrees, but temperatures drop into the 20s through the day. Wind gusts around 30 mph through this afternoon. Some higher gusts are likely in western Ulster County through late this afternoon.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy and cold with less wind. Lows around 22 degrees.
SATURDAY: STORM WATCH (PM) — Mostly cloudy with snow developing. Highs around 34 degrees. First scattered light snow showers can move in after 3 p.m., but the steadier, heavier accumulating snow primarily arrives between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Heavy snow continues overnight with some mixing possible in southern Westchester and Rockland counties. That said, most of this event will be snow with an average of six inches by 8 a.m. Sunday. Please avoid travel Saturday evening through early Sunday. Lows around 28 degrees.
SUNDAY: STORM WATCH (AM) --- Snow tapers off by around 8 a.m. Please use caution when shoveling and traveling. Breaks of sun into the afternoon, but snow-covered and slippery travel will linger. Expect some snow melt through the afternoon. Highs around 36 degrees. Lows around 18 degrees. Icy travel overnight.
MONDAY: Sun and clouds with highs around 34 degrees. Lows near 18 degrees.
TUESDAY: At this point there is around a 50% chance of snow Tuesday evening into early Wednesday. Details become clearer this weekend. There is still a chance that this storm can be pushed to the south. Otherwise, mostly cloudy with highs around 34 degrees. Lows near 26 degrees.
WEDNESDAY: Chance for early morning snow if the storm from Tuesday evening hits. Otherwise, mainly cloudy to partly sunny with highs around 35 degrees. Lows around 27 degrees. THURSDAY - FRIDAY: Chance for snow to mix to rain and possibly back to snow Thursday afternoon through early Valentine's Day Friday. Highs in the mid-30s. Lows in the 20s.
