Democratic Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins prevailed over GOP candidate John Murtagh in the 35th state Senate District race Tuesday.
Stewart-Cousins, the first-term senator from Yonkers, voted for herself at the Nepperhan Community Center and cast a ballot for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.
"I hope obviously to benefit from a huge Democratic turnout,? Stewart-Cousins says. ?I hope also that people recognize the good work that I've been doing for these years.?
After 74 percent of the precincts reported, Stewart-Cousins pulled ahead with a decisive 60 percent to 40 percent win.
It was an uphill battle for Republican challenger John Murtagh, a Yonkers city councilman, who campaigned in the overwhelmingly Democratic 35th state Senate District.
?I wouldn't have gotten into this race if I didn't think I had a chance of taking this district,? Murtagh says.
Stewart-Cousins says she will continue to prioritize her work with schools and the tax burden.
