An Orange County man was injured by a bear Sunday evening.
The Cornwall man says he walked out to his detached garage on Mineral Springs Road just after 9 p.m. and was greeted by a black bear.
The 200-pound adolescent was startled by the encounter and struck the man with his claw then ran off.
The 47-year-old was treated for deep gashes across his chest at Saint Luke's Hospital and later released.
Cornwall police are reminding residents of steps to take in the event of a bear encounter.
"Whenever you encounter a bear even if you're hiking you want to try to scare the bear, as crazy as it sounds. Kind of make yourself look larger than the bear, scream yell, make a lot of noise. Bears aren’t used to interactions with humans and neither are we, but typically a bear will scare away," says Cornwall Police Chief Todd Hazard.
The Cornwall police and DEC plan to place traps on the man's property to trap and relocate the bear.
To keep the bears away, the DEC says not to leave food outdoors, to make sure all garbage is in trash cans with latching lids, and to rinse those cans out routinely with ammonia.
