One of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the state kicked off Saturday afternoon in Yonkers.
The last parade, scheduled for March 21, 2020, was canceled at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many Ukrainian flags appeared along the parade route among all the green and Irish flags in the street.
Anne Turchinsky, the chief of speech-language pathology at St. Joseph’s was at the parade and has both Ukrainian and Irish heritage. Her family is in Ukraine, and she says they need help.
"The descriptions they have shared with us are absolutely frightening,” said Turchinsky.
She says her cousin in Ukraine is 36 weeks pregnant. Another cousin is a doctor who is making Molotov cocktails to keep invaders away from patients.
