Traditionally, the ringing of church bells has been a call to prayer mourning those lost, while comforting grieving families.
According to the Archdiocese of New York website, there have been hashtags created for those wishing to share video on social media of the bells tolling their area. The hashtags include: #ringnybells, #farewellbells and #nychurchbells.
