Spring Valley teen identified as drowning victim in Hudson River

Eric Chugchillin was walking through the water at Haverstraw Beach State Park on Wednesday when he entered a deeper area where the water was over his head, according to New York State Police.

A 19-year-old from Spring Valley has been identified as the person found dead in the Hudson River in Haverstraw.
Eric Chugchillin was walking through the water at Haverstraw Beach State Park on Wednesday when he entered a deeper area where the water was over his head, according to New York State Police. Friends tried to help him, but he went underwater and did not resurface.
Emergency crews arrived around 4 p.m. Dive teams searched the water for hours while marine units, a helicopter and drones searched from above.
Chugchillin's body was recovered just before 6:30 p.m.
Authorities are reminding swimmers and boaters that even calm-looking waters can have dangerous currents underneath.
