Special Olympics New York: Regional floor hockey championship comes to the Hudson Valley
Athletes from across the state are participating in the regional floor hockey competition in Hudson Valley.
Over 200 athletes are competing at the Special Olympics New York at the Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose.
There are several hockey tournaments leading to the state games at the end of the month.
Nancy Bellini, program director for North East Westchester Special Recreation, says the Special Olympics is a big part of the community-based agency.
"It is so important to these guys to be able to show all that they can do,” she said. “They are so excited. They train hard. To shine like they do in the sports that they play is really a great opportunity."
Players told News 12's Caren Pinto that the best part of the game is the friendships they made along the way.
“It's all about the camaraderie for us. We bonded for a long time on and off the court, and we've just been one big happy family ever since,” said Will Smith, a team member of 19 years. "It's all about having us feel included."
