Two staff members were allegedly injured at a juvenile detention center in Goshen, in what sources from inside the facility on Cross Road say was a violent, attempted “takeover."
News 12 received two anonymous tips from inside sources at Goshen Secure indicating that several teens held a female guard at knifepoint and stole her weapon and keys on Tuesday.
Authorities have not confirmed that information, but the Orange County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to an incident at the facility and that state police are handling the investigation.
The individuals who reached out to News 12 asked for help and said they fear there could be a “fatality at the facility,” claiming problems inside are escalating – citing a rise in violence, drugs and the unauthorized use of smuggled cellphones.
“If this situation is not brought to light there will be a death inside this juvenile facility. Please, help us,” said one tipster.
The Office of Children and Family Services oversees the facility. According to their website, Goshen Secure houses juvenile offenders convicted of violent felony crimes until the age of 21, and wards of the court who need secure placement until 18 years of age, in four wings off a centralized building that houses classrooms, recreational areas and other services.
A representative for OCFS tells News 12, “OCFS’ top priority is the health, safety and well-being of all youth and staff in OCFS-operated facilities. Staff followed proper protocols and the incident in question was deescalated accordingly. No staff were hospitalized, and all staff have returned for their regularly scheduled shifts. We cannot comment further on active agency and law enforcement investigations.”
