Sister Barbara Heil, a beloved nun at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, died Friday when a driver crossed the yellow lines on Route 6 and struck her vehicle. She was 80.
Sister Marie Murphy, who was also in the car, remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to authorities. The accident is still under investigation.
The Rev. Mark Vaillancourt, the principal of Kennedy High School, says that during Heil's five decades at the school, she did a little bit of everything. She taught Latin, worked with the drama club and helped out in the front office. She also helped organize Mass every morning in St. Mary's Chapel.
"She had the ability to project love that a young person connects with," Vaillancourt says.
Students and staff members say they'll remember Heil for her courage and compassion.
