A Sleepy Hollow hospital is doing its part in joining a worldwide breastfeeding awareness event.
The "The Global Big Latch" is a synchronized event in 120 countries.
Anyone interested in taking part will meet at Phelps Hospital. It's an opportunity for breastfeeding women in the Hudson Valley to come together, share their stories and look for opportunities for ongoing support.
Phelps is credited with having one of the highest rates of breastfeeding in the state. The lactation consultant at Phelps says it's one of the things that helped the hospital earn the designation of a baby-friendly hospital.
"We were No. 7 in New York state to be designated as a baby-friendly hospital," says Yeva Posner, a lactation consultant. "It took us four years to prepare for that. That preparation includes staff education, policy changing and everything to make it more breastfeeding-friendly."
This is the third year Phelps has hosted a "Global Big Latch." About 50 people participated last year. Hospital officials are hoping to surpass that number this year.
