More than 100 firefighters battled a fast-moving fire Wednesday in a Sleepy Hollow building.
The flames broke out sometime around 4 p.m. at the three-story Beekman Avenue building, which has a restaurant on the ground floor. Hundreds were immediately evacuated. Firefighters continued to put out hotspots for hours and were on the scene well into the evening.
Police say it was a 12-year-old boy who tipped authorities off to the fire, possibly saving the lives of many.
EMS was at the scene, though everyone was able to make it out of their homes or businesses without any serious injuries. At least three families lost their homes.
Fire officials believe the blaze began somewhere in the restaurant. Mayor Philip Zegarelli says the main building is considered a serious safety hazard and will be razed.
