A group of Hudson Valley teens got the chance Thursday to investigate the world through a different lens thanks to a mobile science lab.

About 10 girls in the Sister to Sister STEAM summer camp dug up worms and bugs to look at under microscopes on the Bio Bus, which made a pit stop in Yonkers.

The summer program helps young Black girls explore science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

The custom-made mobile lab travels around the New York City area to bring science to schools, neighborhoods and summer camps.

"They're getting a multi-dimensional experience, so they're getting it during the summer where they can certainly relate to other Black girls," said Sister to Sister International president Cheryl Brannan, who added that it's important experience that could inspire careers in STEM. "STEM jobs pay twice as much as non-STEM jobs, so what we want to do is create a pipeline."

This was also the first time the Bio Bus was used in the field in over a year.

During the pandemic, the program was mostly virtual with scientists bringing standalone science stations to small socially distanced events.
