A single mother of a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old says she was the owner of the car that exploded near Westchester Avenue in Longwood Wednesday night.

The woman, who asked not to be identified or shown on camera, says she was upstairs with her children, when a friend texted her, asking if her car was on fire.

"So, I come down and, there's nothing I can do to stop the fire or bring back the car," she remembered, "So, I just accepted it."

The FDNY says it was already there trying to put out a small trash fire, which the owner tells News 12, she heard started from a couple of kids playing around, according to rumors.

The flames then spread to the car and ignited, destroying the vehicle, the owners' kids' winter jackets and both of their strollers.

"I know that their intention was not to start this huge fire, but now I'm a mom with two kids who has to figure it out," the owner referring to whoever was responsible.

The car had been towed away by the next morning and most of the cleanup was done, but the owner said it was still sinking in for her.

"I don't think it fully processed yet that I'm walking again," she said. "It was my first car. We made so many new memories."

The owner also tells News 12 that she only had basic insurance, not comprehensive coverage for something like this.

However, she is hoping to get some money from the city, since she says the garbage was not properly picked up or taken care of.
